Ian Blatchford's reply about the Science Museum's need to attract
funding could be expected. He makes a valid point about the
institution's need to attract funding.
But in my view it is crassly insensitive for the management of a
prestigious institution, one respected around the world for its
dedication to the history of science, to give way to the blandishments
of an industry which many people dislike and distrust.
The museum's acceptance of this booking shows that it is either
totally insensitive to the reservations many people have about the
arms industry, or if it is, then does not care. I can understand the
need to attract funding, but the consequences of this decision are
likely to be long-lasting in all sorts of subtle ways.
One is the likely subconscious association of the museum with the arms
trade, not an association that any public institution should be happy
with, I would have thought. BAE and its European fellows may lay claim
to being respectable organisations, but the waters around them swirl
deep and murky, and past history suggests that the visibility of their
operations is something like that of a shoal of icebergs.
The next thing would be for the museum to announce the opening of a
new extension - dedicated to the history of drones.
