Hi Sian,

Your project looks really interesting as well and I'd love to read more about it. Do you have anything published yet? If not I'll look for you at the MAC.

All the best,

Matt

Dear Sian,

We agree with Matt, it is a hot topic.

For the past year the University of Surrey and Pervasive Intelligence in partnership with The Lightbox, Watts Gallery, Visit Surrey and Brooklands Museum have been developing a digital interpretation system which will enable organisations to develop content and then generate an AR app. It is not meant to be a bespoke system but one where organisations can become self-reliant. It’s not a system that works for only one collection. It allows users to download the app and use on their own devices and via devices handed out by the organisation. It allows users to wander around with a device.

We'll be ready to roll out the product at the end of the year.

In a bit more detail: we are using image recognition to recognise objects, then we can automatically trigger some AR content and audio. The app also supports a further layering of information and providing journey themes for a collection. It also supports social media and recording of own audio which is great for community engagement and school groups.

We have just been awarded a "Beyond the Visual" project supported by the Digital R&D Fund for the Arts - Nesta, Arts & Humanities Research Council and public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England, which started this July 2014.

The aim is to improve the image recognition to 3D objects, which is tricky.

As Matt already says there is a lot of work in the area of 3D modelling at UCL so our project is different in focus. So the replies so far on this thread have focused on 3d modelling. We won't be focusing on coming up with new ways to develop 3D models for the AR but on practical ways of improving the recognition of the 3D models themselves.

Happy to discuss more about it. FYI we also have a stand at the Museum Association Conference in October.

Best regards,

Helen Treharne Project Manager - Beyond the Visual, visit-ar.org project Matthew Casey, Managing Director, Pervasive Intelligence Ltd.

Subject: [MCG] Augmented Reality in UK Museums

We are currently developing a new North Hertfordshire Museum which will amalgamate the collections of the former Hitchin and Letchworth Museums, and are working with our designers on developing displays.

One of the things that our designers would like to develop is an Augmented Reality installation using a 3D form and some tethered tablets. While this sounds like an exciting and interesting prospect to most of the team, there are some key people who remain unconvinced, concerned that few museums seem to have employed this. They would like more evidence that this is a tested technology, and would like to know of examples that they might be able to see in action.

Can anyone suggest any projects or uses of AR in museums or heritage sites in this country that might demonstrate AR in action, particularly that team members might be able to visit?

Best Wishes

Sian Woodward
