I think we should credit James as he spotted it first!
Re Dominic's post about using advanced search & search history, yes, but it is nowhere near as user friendly and you need to be a fairly advanced user to figure this out.

Funny I was looking for it the other day but didn’t get a chance to go back and investigate it. Thanks for flagging it Louise. I certainly used it and recommended it to researchers here.

Hi James
I had no idea this had disappeared and can definitely see the value of it to further refine searches for broad subject terms. I've used it myself and shown it to students in the past who were not used to searching within native interfaces or formulating a search strategy; it would be a definite loss if its removal was permanent.
Regards
Louise

Subject: [lis-e-resources] ScienceDirect - search within results
Hello -
I'm looking for some feedback on the disappearance of the 'search within results' feature on ScienceDirect.
One of the subject librarians here was stating that they found this very useful for searching with beginners - start with a broad search and then use the 'search within results' box to add another term.
When I asked Elsevier about it, they told me that it was removed to streamline and improve performance of the site.
Has anyone else missed it? Or did you use it, or encourage users to use it? They say they will listen to feedback, and potentially add it back in if there is demand.
Kind regards
James
