Dear colleagues,
Society for Caribbean Studies (see www.caribbeanstudies.org.uk is bound to change over time, and we want to make sure that all our members and potential members are involved. So I'm going to be sending out some questions every now and again to get your opinions on a few things. If you have time, you can either answer to the list, or send an email to me directly: click reply or email [log in to unmask]
The first couple of questions are about next year's conference, which is due to be held at the Drum Intercultural Arts Centre, Birmingham (see http://www.the-drum.org.uk/), from 1st to 3rd July 2015.
1. There are archival materials available at Birmingham Library about the Caribbean
diaspora in Birmingham, including some of Vanley Burke's photographs from several decades (see for example http://calmview.birmingham.gov.uk/CalmView/ and http://www.connectinghistories.org.uk/). We have contacted the archives to see what's there and they have said that we can book a group meeting free of charge, in which an archivist will explain what's available. If we booked this for the day before the conference (Tuesday, 30th Jun) how many might be
interested in a group visit, and are there materials people might like to consult
during the three days of the conference and possibly for longer, e.g. into that
weekend and into the following weeks?
2. There is a possibility of having a screening of John Akomfrah's film 'The Stuart Hall Project' on the Tuesday evening before the conference (30th June), but there would be an additional charge for this and it would be open to the public. If we screened the film, probably with a brief academic introduction, how
many might come if we charged £7.50? This would be in addition to the conference registration fee.
Let me know your thoughts.
All the best,
Pat Noxolo
