Project Archivist
7 months Fixed Term Contract
Location: London
Salary: £22,554 - £31,383 pro rata
The Museum of the Order of St John tells the unique and fascinating story of the Order of St John from its origins in eleventh century Jerusalem, through to its role today with St John Ambulance and the St John Eye Hospital in Jerusalem. Based at two sites in Clerkenwell, St John’s Gate and the Priory Church, the Museum also boasts historic architecture and interiors, and our 12th-century crypt is one of the few surviving Norman structures in London. The Museum has a varied and substantial collection of objects dating from the 12th century and is also home to the St John Archive which contains historical records spanning over 500 years.
The Project Archivist will be required to catalogue the First World War collections to recognised archival standards using the archival software (CALM) as part of the Museum’s centenary project, ‘Volunteers in the Theatre of War’, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The materials contained within this First World War collection include administrative, personnel and ephemeral records of the activities of the Order of St John, which are enhanced by personal correspondences and accounts from employees. They have been appraised as being remarkably valuable to multiple research communities including of medical, military, historical and genealogical interest and part of the Project Archivist’s role will include the promotion and enabling of access to them.
Additionally, working in collaboration with Museum staff and volunteers, the Project Archivist will be required to assist a small group of St John Ambulance Cadets to tell the story of Veronica Nisbet, a Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse. The St John Ambulance Cadets will be working with the Learning and Access Officer (also the Project Manager) to create an interactive learning resource based upon Veronica’s wartime experience which will be displayed within the Museum as well as online.
An enhanced DBS (formerly CRB) check is required for this role.
For this post, the normal working week is a five day week in the period Monday to Friday and the normal working day will be 9am to 5pm. However, some flexibility is expected as the need to do occasional evening and weekend duties will be required.
