Dear All,
I'm just writing up an assemblage from near Carlisle, Cumbria which comes from a possible corn-drying kiln. It has been RC dated to AD 1030-1200 and is dominated by oats with some hulled barley. The material comes from a pit feature which also contained burnt clay, which seems to be from a wattke and daub structure (the impressions of the wattles remain but were presumably burnt away when the daub became burnt clay/ceramic). I can find parallels in Northern Scotland such as an analogous site at Lhanbryde, Moray (Holden 1997), but I am enquiring whether anyone has references for comparable medieval sites (where the burnt daub is preserved showing evidence of a wattle and daub superstructure) in Northern England, or southern Scotland.
Kind regards,
Don.
