Some 65 former college athletes are suing the National Collegiate Athletic
Association, claiming the NCAA, like the National Football League, failed
to protect them from the long-term effects of concussions during their
playing days. To their ranks, add another: James J.R. Cunningham, a Denton
County resident who sued the NCAA in Dallas federal court on Friday.

.
Says his suit, filed by Houston attorneys who are not available for
comment, Cunningham sustained several concussions during his days on the
NCAA hardwood. Shortly after he stopped playing ball, Cunningham says, he
began experiencing the symptoms often described by athletes with head
injuries: severe headaches, seizures, confusion and cognitive
deterioration and other symptoms that, unknown to him, were consistent
with traumatic injuries resulting from the multiple concussions he
sustained as a student athlete.
.
The suit says Cunningham sough treatment all over: at Johns Hopkins, the
Mayo Clinic, even Baylor University. He underwent CAT scans, MRIs, you
name it. The bills mounted up. He blames the NCAA, which, he says, knew
what could happen to athletes with head injuries but still allowed coaches
to put players back on the field or the court moments after having their
bells rung.
.
As a direct result of the concussive head injuries he suffered while
playing NCAA basketball, Mr. Cunningham suffers from constant headaches,
memory loss, dizziness, severe depression, speech impediments, panic
disorder, anxiety, mobility issues, irritability, chronic traumatic
encephalopathy and panic disorder, says the suit. Mr. Cunningham did not
suffer from these conditions prior to incurring the concussions while
playing NCAA basketball.
