Noted in the recent reports about the Canonbie coalfield that the Duke of Buccleugh seems to have an interest in the coal there - is that some kind of exemption?
If there WAS coal/oil/gas in Cornwall it would presumably have been nationalised the same as everywhere else.

Further to Simon's note:-
Coal was Nationalised in 1938 and the mines in 1947.
The rights to some small areas of coal were 'returned/sold back to' the
owners - usually where an otherwise uneconomic coal seam was being
worked with its associated fireclay or ganister. This is known as
'alienated coal' and areas of it certainly exist in the Halifax area.
Sorry Keith, I've no idea if the Duke of Cornwall's coal was exempted
from the process, but there is probably a copy of the 1938 Act on line.
The objective of the Act was to rationalise the working of coal and help
reduce the number of collieries/colliers.
