The Faculty of Health & Social Care presents
Qualitative research methods Workshop:
‘Getting the most out of focus groups’
Professor Rosaline Barbour
Thursday 10 and Friday 11 July 2014
The Open University Milton Keynes
We are delighted to announce the 2014 series of workshops exploring qualitative research methods, to be held at The Open University. These workshops will be facilitated by our Professor of Health Care and qualitative research expert, Rosaline Barbour.
The first of these workshop is an intensive 2-day workshop ‘Getting the most out of focus groups’, which will be held on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 July 2014. This workshop is ideal for PhD Students in Social Sciences or Health Sciences, or for research active healthcare professionals/practitioners and researchers who are new to focus groups.
Workshop Outline
Morning sessions: Designing focus group studies and generating data using focus groups.
Afternoon sessions: Analysing and presenting focus group research.
Focus groups have been widely used – both in applied contexts and to explore disciplinary and theoretical concerns. This has led to an unhelpful distinction being made between these different usages. This
workshop seeks to bridge this gap, by showing how paying attention to research design and in-depth analysis can pay dividends, whichever end of the spectrum is involved. It will guide participants through the
challenges posed by purposive sampling, development of topic guides, selection of stimulus materials, and data generation, emphasising the value of taking a thoughtful and thorough approach. The potential
of ‘grounded theory’-based approaches – including thematic coding, returning to the field, and carrying out second-stage sampling, will be explored. The workshop will also illustrate how some of the ‘tools’ of
conversation and discourse analysis can be brought to bear on making sense of data generated in a more ‘applied’ context.
Participants will have the opportunity to carry out group exercises on sampling, generating data, developing a provisional coding frame, coding transcripts and refining a coding frame. The virtual topic will
be ‘Views about weight management’. Delegates will be provided with hand-outs, reading lists and a copy of Rosaline Barbour’s book ‘Doing
Focus Groups’ (2008) Sage, London.
Registration is now OPEN!
