Dear Colleague
On behalf of The National Archives I am leading a discussion of issues around deaccessioning and disposal, leading to a new piece of guidance on deaccessioning and disposal. The guidance will:
• discuss issues around deaccessioning and disposal.
• clarify terminology (deaccessioning, reappraisal etc.) in an archival context
• make a statement of principle about the ethics of deaccessioning
• provide practical instructions on deaccessioning for archive service managers
• support archive managers who are aiming for accreditation and are reviewing their policies and procedures around deaccessioning and disposal
We are particularly keen to heard your views and experiences. Over the next few months there will be a number of opportunities to participate in the discussion, but at this stage we are looking for:
• Case studies of reviewing collections/deaccessioning / writing deaccessioning or disposal policies - successful or otherwise - collected by interview. These could be used without identifying the repository.
• Participants for a virtual discussion via webinar. This will take place at 10am on 30th June.
If you would like to participate in the webinar or if you could provide information for a case study I'd be grateful if you could reply by email. We look forward to discussing the guidance with you.
Regards
Janice
