Hi Bill,
Yes, this is of concern indeed. I have been receiving a number of suggestions and individually, of course I cannot take the decision of whether to be involved or not and I guess the community would be split on this question as well. Some people feel that not engaging at all is not an answer either - as in this case it will be decided for people. So these voices shouldn't be ignored. I know that CMS community is highly critical of the exercise and there has been lots of publications etc. but as I have mentioned before the resistance seems to be consisting of withdrawal only which is a concern to many.
The suggestion I propose is that I send the replies that I got NOT as a unified voice of WEEL or the BSA but as individual concerns of academics who took part. I think the responses were very critical indeed.
Best wishes,
Maria

Subject: Business School Journal Ranking Consultation of BSA members!!
Dear BSA WEEL colleagues,
I have seen the correspondence on the new so called ABS list.
I am Vice-Chair, Research and Publications of the British Academy of Management. I'll be honest, I wasn't on this list until someone sent me the correspondence on the ABS list. But I am glad to be on it now, beyond this ABS thing.
BSA colleagues should know that BAM has deliberately taken a decision not to be involved in this list.
Beyond this, I have to speak in a personal capacity. However, I was elected as BAM Vice-Chair a platform of being opposed to this, and most other lists, as against the interest of its members.
The new list is a private sector enterprise, and the decision making behind its rankings is ultimately, opaque - more so, even, than the REF. Likewise, its ownership and governance.
The timescale of the 'consultation' with you should in itself raise deep concerns, given the list's significant performative consequences (if the last list is anything to go by).
I believe the involvement of scholarly associations in its production will give it a false credibility.
For example, if there is a response from the WEEL group, would it not be possible for the producers to say 'this is produced in consultation with the BSA' ? If this was so, the BSA would have been enrolled into giving legitimacy to a business enterprise which certainly many of us is not in the interest of individual scholars. The BSA is also in danger of being cited as being on the other side of BAM in its support of this list.
So, I would ask you, individually and collectively not to engage in any consultation on the list, but instead to object to its very existence. That's me speaking personally, of course.
Bill Cooke
