Dear All,
The Knives Forks and Spoons Press welcomes the return of Stephen Emmerson, one of the first poets we published. His excellent new collection is ‘Comfortable Knives’, and this is what Scott Thurston has to say about it:
“Stephen Emmerson’s latest collection is his best yet – the 13-line sonnet compressing and bringing out the brilliancies in his dense, urgent patternings of sound and syntax. Emmerson appears entirely, painfully, present in his body of language: ‘who takes the pinch. Pick that reliever / with punch-drunk capital, paid to kick him the balls.’ And yet an argument threads through the sequence about how ‘memory is a language’ and ‘history is nothing but habit’ in ‘the process of forgetting.’ These lines slip off a razor’s edge in their dissections of the mores of urban life under capitalism, their unguarded attack achieving ‘a new / study based on language.’ Tune-in and ‘listen / to the know of wrought.”
