Transitions and Transgressions
A one-day postgraduate and early-career researcher conference
Department of English and Drama, Loughborough University
Thursday 11th September 2014
Keynote speaker: Dr Pam Thurschwell, University of Sussex
Loughborough University’s Department of English and Drama is pleased to announce the inaugural conference in association with the Modern and Contemporary Research Group. Transitions and Transgressions considers both literary responses to periods of historical upheaval, and literature which effects (or aims to effect) changes in cultural perspectives. Our specific focus is on ways of seeing and ways of experiencing change. We welcome papers from postgraduates and early-career researchers that deal with any period, author or text relating to the conference themes, and encourage interdisciplinary approaches. Key areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
● Transgressive and transitional literary genres (the Gothic, Horror, the Weird Tale, Sensation fiction)
● Transgressive and transitional figures in literature (the New Woman, the exile, the adolescent, the traveller)
● Theories of transition and transgression (queer theory, intersectionality, affect theory, trauma theory)
● Temporal transitions (fin de siècle, post-war narratives, 9/11)
● Formal and stylistic transgressions and representations of change (Modernism, the postmodern novel, experimental poetry)
● Political and religious transgressions and developments
● The history of criminal transgression
● Transitions and transgressions in the Digital Age
We invite proposals from postgraduate and early career researchers across the humanities. Abstracts of c.250 words should be sent to [log in to unmask] by Monday 23rd June 2014.
