Independent States Conference
4 -5 September 2014
Institute for Creative Enterprise, Edge Hill University
What does 'independence' mean for and within the creative and cultural sectors? Independent, indie, freelance, entrepreneur, radical and oppositional are located on a continuum of independence signaling aesthetic, creative, economic, political or ideological distinctiveness. At the same time, when it comes to labour, these terms may be indicative of precarious or portfolio careers while changes to funding, production, distribution and marketing have transformed relationships between indies and audiences. This conference will consider the role, impact, benefits and characteristics of indies and independence within local, regional, national and global contexts.
We welcome papers that deal with any aspect of independence in relation to the cultural and creative sectors. Topics may include but are not limited to:
· Concepts and definitions of indie, alternative, freelance, entrepreneurship, oppositional and radical in relation to culture, creative industries and creative and cultural production.
· Independent/ indie film, music, theatre, publishing, computer games, animation, television, performance, radio.
