ITALY: DIVINE COMEDY SUMMER COURSE & ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING ASSISTANTSHIPS
For those interested in attending the Divine Comedy Summer Course (see below),
it is possible to apply to cover the course fees (€250) by teaching English to
Italian students aged 15- 19 at the local Scuola Superiore di Iseo during the
same period, 3h/day for 5 days (total 15h).
The cost of travel and accommodation would remain at the charge of
participants.
To apply as a teaching assistant you must be enrolled in a Humanities course,
be of English mother tongue, have an excellent knowledge of English grammar,
syntax etc., have a good knowledge of Italian (also indispensable to follow the
Dante course), reliability and ease of interaction with young people in a class
situation.

DIVINE COMEDY SUMMER COURSE 2014
Iseo (BS), Italy – from 30th June to 11th July 2014
This course it is aimed predominantly at students of Italian at European
universities who study the Divine Comedy as part of their degree programme; it
aims to deal with the fundamental characteristics of Dante's thought, in the
wider context of medieval history and culture. It provides introductory lessons
on the social history and politics of Florence between the 13th and 14th
centuries and the life of Dante, as well as the reading and commentary of some
cantos of the Divine Comedy.
To profit from this course, students must be able to communicate in Italian at
a high level.
The topics that will be dealt with during the course are as follows:

. THE IDEA OF THE MEDIEVAL IN WESTERN HISTORIOGRAPHY
. CHARACTERISTICS OF MEDIEVAL SOCIETY AND CULTURE

. EVOLUTION OF POLITICAL STRUCTURES IN DANTESQUE THOUGHT

. CLASSICAL CULTURE AND DANTE
. DANTE AS AUTHOR AND PROTAGONIST IN THE DIVINE COMEDY
. DANTE'S CONCEPTION OF POWER AND POLITICS
. JOURNEY AND COMPANIONS IN THE DIVINE COMEDY
. MAN'S RESPONSIBILITY IN THE DIVINE COMEDY
3) READING, PARAPHRASIS AND COMMENTARY ON SPECIFIC PASSAGES FROM THE DIVINE
COMEDY
This courses will take place in Iseo, a small resort on the shores of Lake
Iseo in the province of Brescia. The lakeside setting and proximity the
Valcamonica (an area rich in art and home to a park of prehistoric rock
engravings), is ideal for those who want to explore the local culture,
outstanding nature and history of art after classes. The cities of Verona,
Mantua, Cremona and Milan are also easily accessible.
