Dear all,
Two PhD positions in structural biology are available in the newly
established research group of Dr. Sebastian Geibel at the Institute
for Molecular Infection Biology, University of Würzburg in Germany.
The PhD positions are funded by the Elite Network of Bavaria to
investigate the type VII secretion system, which is used by pathogenic
mycobacteria such as M. tuberculosis to subvert the human immune
defence by the secretion of various proteins. The Geibel group aims to
understand the molecular architecture of the type VII secretion system
and to characterize the mechanism of protein secretion using a
multidisciplinary approach employing a combination of structural
biology, biophysical and biochemical techniques. The Geibel lab has
access to state-of-the-art instruments and is integrated into a
stimulating, collaborative research environment that includes the
Institute for Molecular Infection Biology, the Rudolf Virchow Center
for Experimental Medicine, the Biocenter, the University Hospital, and
the Max Planck Research Groups for Systems Immunology in Würzburg.
PhD projects will involve structure-function studies on large membrane
protein complexes using a variety of approaches including electron
microscopy and/or X-ray along with complementary biophysical and
biochemical methods. Applicants should have a strong background in
molecular biology or biochemistry and a strong interest in either
X-ray crystallography or electron microscopy. Previous experience in
protein expression and purification as well as biophysical techniques
to characterize protein interactions would be an advantage. Good
English language skills are essential; knowledge of German is not
required. The PhD positions are funded by the Elite Network of Bavaria
for a period of 5 years. The salary will be according to the
collective agreement (TV-L scale).
Please send applications and informal inquiries including a short
letter of motivation detailing research interests and expertise, CV
and contact information of two references as a single pdf file to
[log in to unmask] In case of equivalent
qualifications, disabled applicants will be preferentially considered.
