This symposium aims to investigate the dynamics of social and spatial inequality in global cities.
In particular, we focus on the spatialisation of class, concentrating on the processes and practices
by which this takes place in two proximate yet very different cities. The comparative focus of the
event aims to provide insights into how these processes play out in different urban contexts.
The event brings into conversation scholars working on different geographical scales – from the
micro-level focus on neighbourhoods and public spaces, through to macro-level mappings of class
onto the city space – and in diverse locations within these cities. It focuses on the processes by which
class difference is mapped onto the city, the relationships of classed actors to the city and its spaces,
and the intersections of relationships with the production and experience of social inequality.
