Hi everyone
167 have responded to the question about a name for the new single
organisation, so far. I will close the survey at the end of play on Friday
so if you haven't responded and want a say then please take part by clicking
on the following link
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/OHname
Many thanks, the response is a great example of how we can contribute to the
discussion about the future of an occupational health body that can
represent us.
Regards
Karen

Thanks for doing this Karen - really helpful.
I am compiling comments on the name from all of the other sources and
feeding back the results/comments/issues raised to the Project team. Could
you let me know the results of the survey when you close it + all of the
comments and I will incorporate in my report.

Good debate this - contribution to the survey is now 144 and 22 comments
about the word college.
I found this out about the use of Royal - as Anne says it sounds like it has
to have a record of establishment and achievement
There are in excess of 900 Chartered
Bodies<http://privycouncil.independent.gov.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/140
326-Record-of-Charters-Granted.xls>. A Royal Charter is a way of
incorporating a body, that is turning it from a collection of individuals
into a single legal entity. A body incorporated by Royal Charter has all the
powers of a natural person, including the power to sue and be sued in its
own right. Royal Charters were at one time the only means of incorporating a
body, but there are now other means (becoming a registered company, for
example), so the grant of new Charters is comparatively rare. New grants of
Royal Charters are these days reserved for eminent professional bodies or
charities which have a solid record of achievement and are financially
sound. In the case of professional bodies they should represent a field of
activity which is unique and not covered by other professional bodies.
At least 75% of the corporate members should be qualified to first degree
level standard. Finally, both in the case of charities and professional
bodies, incorporation by Charter should be in the public interest.
This last consideration is important, since once incorporated by Royal
Charter a body surrenders significant aspects of the control of its internal
affairs to the Privy Council. Amendments to Charters can be made only with
the agreement of The Queen in Council, and amendments to the body's by-laws
require the approval of the Council (though not normally of Her Majesty).
This effectively means a significant degree of Government regulation of the
affairs of the body, and the Privy Council will therefore wish to be
satisfied that such regulation accords with public policy.

I think the term college has been considered as it follows the "Royal
College" approach as per:
Royal College of Surgeons;
Royal College of Physicians;
Royal College of GPs;
Royal College of Gynaecologists etc.
The term Royal reflects having a "Royal Charter" = not sure how that is
achieved but perhaps that can only be conferred once the institution has
been established.

Must make it clear that the names for the new single organisation in the
survey are not mine, they have been proposed to SOM and FOM. Link is below
if you want to contribute.

Dear List
As you know the potential for a single organisation representing a
multidisciplinary occupational health is moving along and could be reality
if FOM and SOM members vote yes
In preparation a name for the new organisation is currently being discussed
- I would love to hear the jisc members views on this so to collate
responses I have turned this question into a survey which I will collate and
report back as the favourite name.
It will take 1 minute to answer as there is only one question so to
participate please click on the following link

Many thanks
Karen
