Dear Jenn,
what a fabulous job description that would be :-)
The biggest issue with this sort of job is that in the context of museums/academia it's very difficult to make an appointment at the right point as far as seniority, accountability, line management, salary, skills are concerned.
This description matches pretty much part of what I do in my day job, and I know at least five or six people who do the same in similar jobs and similar institutions. However, curiously none of us has any of this in their job description. It's something that emerged as a side-effect: someone got here by personal interest, others by being an Open Data champion; a good deal, especially in academia, by being in charge of an institutional repository system from a technical or semi-technical (content, API, licensing, open access) point of view.
In most of these cases, the job descriptions weren't amended, and most of these activities (hackdays, open data portals, advice to FOI officers, etc...) have become part of "extra" activities - tolerated in most cases, silently encouraged, but rarely formalised.
The question in our context, whenever we have discussed the establishment of a similar position, sound like:
- who would be responsible to this person?
- would they work in isolation or in a team?
- how can they hold to account employees from such different areas of expertise in order to get things done?
- what would be their relationship with FOI officers?
- can they do this with a limited budget or no budget?
- if emerging in-house, which unit has the right set of expertise (IT? Library? Comms?)
I suspect in a museum context things might be very similar.
Kind regards,
--

Subject: [MCG] Fantasy job description: content partnerships coordinator
Hello all
It's Friday, so what better time is there to draft a new fantasy job description?
I'd be interested to find out if anyone employs someone in the role of 'content partnerships coordinator' [working title], someone who is responsible for:
- seeking out opportunities to share open cultural data with partner platforms, and managing those relationships
- organising open data events like hackdays, edit-a-thons, and so on
- advocating for an organisation's digitisation + open data programmes to external stakeholders
- coordinating transfer of data from one platform to another (requiring technical skills, understanding of metadata schemas, APIs etc)
- and generally just being the person who gets to have fun going to all the OpenGLAM events, meeting interesting people and pushing open data to the broadest possible audience.
Does this sound like anything that exists? I'm putting this out to a few other lists and to Twitter, but I'd welcome any thoughts you might have (besides 'good luck getting approval for that post!').
Best wishes
Jenn
