There are still a few places on the event below

You are invited to an afternoon training course held by the CILIP Academic and Research Libraries Group and CILIP Information Services Group (London and South East sections)

KEEPING UP TO DATE WITH NEW RESEARCH: SKILLS AND TOOLS FOR LIBRARY STAFF AND USERS

When: Wednesday 9th July, 1.30-6pm (registration from 1pm)
Where: CILIP HQ, Ridgmount Street, London, WC1E 7AE, http://www.cilip.org.uk/cilip/contact-us

Course outline:
Information sources are getting more varied and the sheer volume of accessible new research is huge, but it is vital that staff and customers undertaking research keep up to date with the latest literature in their subject. The aim of this half day course is to give attendees a good understanding of the main free tools library and information staff can use, either in their own research or when helping customers, with keeping up to date with new research or searching for recent academic journal articles.

Course speakers include:
Karen Blakeman (freelance trainer and consultant). Karen will focus on free internet search tools, including Google Advanced Search and Google Scholar, as well as RSS, email and social media such as twitter, blogs, discussion groups, and LinkedIn.
Sian Aynsley (Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust Library) and Tom MacMillan (Royal College of Surgeons of England Library) will present on their experience of using social media and current awareness in their work, including issues and methods you can adopt locally.
Roddy Macleod (retired Librarian with over 30 years' experience in University Libraries) will talk about the JournalTOCs (Table of Contents) service: www.journaltocs.ac.uk<http://www.journaltocs.ac.uk> to which he contributes.
Katharine Spackman (Oxfordshire Libraries) and Neil Mcclean (Kent Libraries) and Jonathan Griffin (Publishers Licensing Society will present on collaborating on the Access to Research project. Launched this year, the Access to Research scheme provides access to 1.5 million academic journal articles in public libraries free of charge.

Networking and discussion:
Discussion sessions will also give an opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences with colleagues on using different search tools and current awareness services.
We would also like to give participants the opportunity to continue to network with colleagues by meeting for drinks or dinner afterwards. We will suggest some venues for this, but recommendations are also welcome.

Who should attend:
This course is aimed at anyone who needs to keep abreast with new research or search for recent literature in their information work. If you need help with getting started or need more confidence with keeping up to date with research then this is the course for you!

£30 + VAT (£36) for CILIP members
