Caroline,
Some five years ago we started a library blog as a repository of everything the library generates - help resources, news. At the same time we abandoned the library's own page on Moodle which was inaccessible to anyone with no valid college network access (majority of workplace-based learners, many apprentices, students whose fee payment has been delayed for whatever reason but they'd been allowed to start their courses etc.); and requiring login from anyone else - unnecessary barrier.
At the same time, we got few pages on the college website with the full editorial access - after blackmailing the Marketing team with establishing the library website elsewhere if we don't get those pages.
Soon, it became apparent that the pages on the college website and blog duplicated each other - extra work for us. This year, a new college website was launched and its only emphasis is recruitment and publicity. Though the Marketing were happy for us to develop our own pages at the later stage (I am sure we'd proved ourselves as responsible developers of the library pages on the old website), I have decided to abandon the Library presence on the college website apart of two links to our blog which has been transformed into the proper College Library website, www.nwhc.ac.uk/library.
For a number of reasons, I am considering moving it to the college server soon if I get sufficient support from the IT team.
This has been the right strategy for us and the college. I have just heard that the Creative Arts department has been given the green light from Marketing for developing their own website too. And. it appears, they'll be using our Library's model for that. The Marketing team is focused heavily on supporting recruitment; it's freed the Library to support the current students and staff in the way I see it helpful.
We do aim to be present on the course-specific pages on Moodle as much as we can; mainly by providing tutors with the URL to the resources they wanted or we suggest. No plans for the separate Library page there though. It works very well.
Kind regards,

Subject: [lis-e-resources] Adding all library resources to Moodle and no website/intranet/portal
Hello all,
It has been mooted here that we get rid of our library intranet and just host resources on Moodle alone.
The idea behind it is so that all resources will be accessed seamlessly via one interface - this can be achieved by us integrating our resources into a library tab and also adding specific resources in relevant units anyway, but the idea is being pushed forward.
I have concerns about this, as I feel we do need a library web presence, and we also don't want to put all our eggs in one basket.
I would love to hear your views on this and if anyone has done this and it is working well (or otherwise) I'd love to hear from you too.
Many thanks for your time.
Best wishes,
Caroline
