Dear Colleagues,
You may find it interesting to read an elegant, design-oriented industry policy article by Goran Roos that appears in The Conversation today.
http://theconversation.com/for-want-of-industry-policy-our-living-standards-are-set-to-fall-23317
This article brings economics and innovation together with design by examining the economic landscape of a modern industrial society to expose gaps and needs, then examining open sectors for innovation opportunities. It is at this point that design activity begins, using design process and services to identify and shape appropriate products and services.
While the necessary design activity normally takes place within companies — or should — I am sharing this with you to show how different analytical frameworks inform and function in the context of design research. Those of us who work in design research for the university sector can benefit from these kinds of analytical techniques, and we can also reach out to industry partners and government agencies with proposals based on this kind of analysis.
Goran Roos is Professor of Business and Strategic Design at Swinburne University. He is also Chair of the Advanced Manufacturing Council of South Australia.
Warm wishes,
Ken
