Dear Robert
First of all, you need to be very clear about the ownership of these films. If they have been deposited with you but are, as your email suggests, from organisations such as the BBC, ITV and other professional / commercial broadcasters and film makers, they copyright in them will still rest with those organisations and you should not do anything with the material – even digitising it - without contacting them and discussing your requirements. You refer to this material as ’your’ film, but although it is in your possession I do not think you can be said to ‘own’ it.
My understanding is that the term ‘cine film’ is usually used to refer to amateur material, rather than professional, and copyright in this will last for 70 years, being held by either the film maker (if living) or his/her estate.
You may find it useful to look at this: http://www.ipo.gov.uk/c-essential.pdf.
I hope this is helpful.
Best wishes

Subject: Film Copyright
Dear all,
Could anyone please give me the definitive answer on this? We are in the process of digitising our cinefilm, and our media department are keen to then publicise it to a wider audience. I am however concerned about copyright – they reckon copyright in film expires after 50 years, but the reading I’ve done from the National Archives suggests it is ‘70 years after the death of the last to die of the principal director, the authors of the screenplay and dialogue, and the composer of music’. So, who’s right?
We have a lot of cinefilm, most of which has come from organisations like BBC, ITN, ABC, and some of which is in such a poor state that we have had to send it away without knowing anything about what is on it!
Sorry for what must seem like a simple question but as the only archivist at Lord’s I have no-one else to turn to but Jiscmail!
Kind regards, Robert
