Thanks for your input, I do like your mnemonic systems - I hope no Spanish ladies on this listserv will get offended.
Reconstructing the carpal articulations was kind of my last resort, as you say, it can be long and painful. In my experience, even after reconstruction, it can be difficult to label the bones - as far as I know, beaver have 9 carpal bones (http://photos.archeozoo.org/picture/2502-Castor_fiber-57/category/77-castor_d_europe_subadulte_langen_european_beaver_subadult_lang_langes_castor_europeo_subadulto_lang_), as opposed to carnivores and ungulates that often a reduced number of fused carpals. Beside, as beavers are aquatic, they have in a general way pretty "weird" bones.
