The first World Humanitarian Summit will take place in Istanbul, Turkey in 2016. The landscape of humanitarian action has changed over the last two decades since the current capacities and structures were established to provide a framework for the coordination of international humanitarian assistance. Growth in the scope and diversity of humanitarian needs, as well as a more complex operating environment, have created new challenges. There are also new opportunities: a wider range of actors have become involved, and innovations improve service delivery in each response.
The summit will focus on several core themes that have emerged from recent policy discussions: 1) humanitarian effectiveness, 2) reducing vulnerability and managing risk, 3) transformation through innovation, and 4) serving the needs of people in conflict. For more information on the summit, please visit www.worldhumanitariansummit.org.
Desired profile of Thematic Team members: Several years' experience in humanitarian assistance with a particular emphasis on contexts involving conflict and violence; an awareness of issues related to access, protection, displacement, trends in the changing nature of conflict and violence (including urban violence and violence against women and children); and an understanding of humanitarian principles, international humanitarian law and human rights law.
How to express interest in becoming a thematic team member:
Candidates who wish to participate (or organizations that wish to sponsor an individual participant) as a member of one of the Thematic Teams should express interest in writing by e-mail to the WHS secretariat ([log in to unmask]) by 14 March 2014. Applications received after this date will not be considered. Please include the following in a brief e-mail:

simply, how the candidate's individual work relates to each (prioritize themes if there are more than
one of interest);
. Indication of whether some financial support for the team member's participation will need to be
mobilized; and
. Name and contact details of two professional references.
