Exploring the Interfaces 3: Prosody and Constituent Structure (ETI3)

Montreal, Quebec, Canada, 8-10 May 2014

http://www.mcgill.ca/linguistics/events/upcoming-events/eti3

Exploring the Interfaces (ETI) 3 will take place at McGill University from May 8-10, 2014. This workshop will be the last of three workshops organized by the McGill Syntactic Interfaces Research Group (McSIRG) as part of a multi-year grant to study linguistic interfaces. Following ETI 1 (Word structure) and ETI 2 (Implicatures, alternatives and the semantics/pragmatics interface), the topic of ETI 3 will be 'Prosody and Constituent Structure'.

In particular, ETI 3 will deal with issues surrounding prosodic and phonological evidence for syntactic constituent structure, with a focus on verb-initial languages.

Goals of the Workshop:

- To bring together researchers working on issues at the syntax-phonology interface (e.g. syntactic constituency, prosodic effects on word order) from the perspectives of syntax, prosody, and phonology/phonetics

- To bring together researchers working on a variety of different languages, with an emphasis on languages with default verb-initial word order

- To encourage communication and discussion about methodologies that can be used for the empirical study of prosody and the syntax-phonology interface

Invited Speakers:

Judith Aissen (UC Santa Cruz)

Sasha Calhoun (Victoria University of Wellington)

Lauren Eby Clemens (Harvard)

From Sound to Gesture (S2G): Communication as speech, prosody, gestures and signs

Padova, Italy, 21-23 May 2014

http://www.maldura.unipd.it/LCL/S2G/

Understanding how human communication works requires investigating the complex relations between abstract representations of both sounds and gestures and their concrete realizations. The study of both spoken and signed language can provide a key to understanding the fascinating connections between human sounds, gestures and language.

The aim of this conference is to bring together scholars interested in the relationships between different modalities (acoustic, visual) and between different levels within the same modality (e.g., phonology-phonetics, verbal-nonverbal, prosodic-segmental, etc.).

Instrumental Articulatory Phonetics and Dialectological Fieldwork: Strange Bedfellows?

Workshop session of Methods in Dialectology XV

Groningen, The Netherlands, 11-15 August 2014

Traditionally, articulatory phonetics was limited to a laboratory setting. As of recently, however, the collection of articulatory data is also possible in the field, thanks to Ultrasound Tongue Imaging, which is non-invasive, portable, and inexpensive compared to most other instrumental articulatory techniques. Studies using ultrasound have already shown that this method provides new insights concerning sociolinguistic and dialectal variation. In addition, the combination of acoustic and articulatory measurements can show a more complete picture of a sound change in progress.

However, several challenges arise when using ultrasound, such as obtaining valid data, synchronizing articulatory and audio data, extracting comparable measures, and developing methods for quantitative analysis. All these have been the topic of active research related to the use of ultrasound in different linguistic subfields.

This workshop will serve as a forum for scientific exchange on the advances in sociolinguistic fieldwork that are made possible by the use of ultrasound, as well as on the current limitations and development of methodological approaches. We invite abstracts for oral presentations of 30 minutes. Each presentation will be followed by a 15 minute discussion by a fellow researcher, and 15 minutes for plenary questions and discussion. Topics may include dialectal and sociophonetic studies using ultrasound, but may also be more general. For instance, we welcome abstracts which address methodological issues related to using ultrasound in dialectal and sociophonetic fieldwork.

However, there is also a clear need for conceptual and theoretical reflection. For example, how can ultrasound data shed light on phonological or sociolinguistic questions? What do covert articulations, in which the articulation of a sound is made, but has no acoustic effect, tell us about phonological representations?

The workshop that is proposed here will be part of the conference Methods in Dialectology XV. This conference will be held on 11-15 August 2014 in Groningen, the Netherlands.

Workshop on Speech, Language and Audio in Multimedia (SLAM 2014)

(Satellite event of the 15th Annual Conference Interspeech, Singapore.)

Penang, Malaysia, 11-12 September 2014

http://language.cs.usm.my/SLAM2014/

Call deadline: 12 May 2014

Following the first successful edition of the Workshop on Speech, Language and Audio in Multimedia (SLAM) in Marseille, France last year, we will be bringing the next edition of the workshop to Penang, Malaysia! SLAM workshop aims at bringing together researchers working in speech, language and audio processing to analyze, index and access multimedia data. Multimedia data are now available in very large amounts: Lectures, meetings, interviews, debates, conversational broadcast, podcasts, social videos on the Web, etc. Such data, along with the associated use scenarios, raise specific challenges: Robustness facing the high variability in quality; Efficiency to handle very large amount of data; Semantics shared across modalities; Potentially high error rates in transcription; etc. Worldwide, several national and international research projects are focusing on audio analysis of multimedia data. Similarly, various benchmark initiatives have been initiated such as TRECVID MED, MediaEval, or ETAPE and REPERE in France.

SLAM 2014 is organized in conjunction with Interspeech 2014 over one and a half days, starting Thursday 11 September 2014 and ending Friday 12 September 2014. Penang is conveniently connected by bus, train and flight to Singapore, where the Interspeech 2014 conference will take place. The format of the workshop will include an invited talk, oral presentations of scientific work and a poster session for project and benchmark presentations. SLAM2014 Workshop is jointly organized by the ISCA SIG on Speech and Language in Multimedia and the IEEE SIG on Audio and Speech Processing in Multimedia. The proceeding will be published by ISCA and available online at ISCAOnline Archive. Best papers selected will be able to extend their paper to be submitted to special issue in a dedicated journal that we will announce later.

The SLAM workshop intends to bring together players from the field to share recent research results, discuss ongoing and future projects, benchmarking initiatives and applications. We expect communications on research work, project description, evaluation initiative, demonstrations and applications dealing with speech and/or language and/or audio on any type of multimedia material. The list of topics of interest includes (but is not limited to):

• Audio event detection and audio classificatication

• Speech and speaker recognition on multimedia material

• Audio-aware genre analysis and classification

• Multimodal speaker identification and clustering

• Multimedia spoken term detection and content retrieval

• Speech and audio aware content segmentation and structuring

• Audio indexing and fingerprinting

• Robust feature extraction and processing

• Natural language processing for multimedia

• Metadata extraction: Entity extraction, keyword extraction, etc.

• Summarization and hyperlink generation

• Multimodal fusion and integration involving audio

• Generation of descriptive text for multimedia

• Speech and audio multimedia applications and services

• Databases and benchmarks

• Large scale speech and audio analysis

• Navigation in multimedia audio content applied to any media such as:

o Professional broadcasts – TV, radio, podcasts, newsfeeds, synopsis, etc.

o Social media – YouTube, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, Voice Social Network, etc.

o Audiovisual archives – Lectures and conferences, meetings, etc.

o Music – Music catalogs, music collections, etc

Publication and Post Publication

Prospective authors should submit a manuscript following instructions on the web site. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers. Proceedings will be published online in ISCA open access and a special issue in a dedicated journal is targeted.

Paper Preparation

SLAM 2013 papers must follow the following paper format: 5 pages of text plus one page (maximum) for references only. This will facilitate the sometimes difficult arbitration between work description and citation coverage. Any paper with text on the 6th page other than references will be rejected.

The working language of the workshop is English.

We are using the same formatting as the SLAM 2013. Feel free to use the existing paper kit if you have one.

Or Download the Paper Kit on the website.
