Short description:
Present-day life in rural areas in Europe is influenced by processes of
demographic ageing and depopulation, the outflow of higher educated
people and pressurized facilities and services. These developments may
influence the way rural inhabitants experience rural life and what their
villages mean to them. The seemingly contradictory idea exists that
livability in rural areas will diminish, although rural areas in general
are perceived as having excellent qualities of life. This raises the
question to what extent rural quality of life or the livability of
villages indeed is affected, and if and how this differs for different
groups of people. Determinants of this rural quality of life can be
related to physical residential qualities, social aspects of rural life,
and personal aspects such as stage in life course, rural rootedness, and
social participation. This PhD project aims at unraveling what
determines rural livability for different types of village inhabitants.
