Dear Colleague, Please bring the following information to the attention of students who may be interested in undertaking an MSc in Statistics.
------------------------------------------------
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Lancaster University is pleased to announce the availability of a number of studentships for students following our one year taught MSc in Statistics:
o 3 studentships provided by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). These are intended to support students who wish to go on to work as statisticians in areas of benefit to the National Health Service.
These grants are open to UK and EU students
o 4 studentships provided by the Medical Research Council(MRC), intended for students who wish to go on to work as statisticians in areas of medical research. These grants are open to UK students.
In each case the studentships cover full tuition fees and also provide a generous tax-free stipend to cover living expenses.
In addition to the studentships we also expect to have a number of bursaries, available to both UK/EU and overseas students, to cover a proportion of the tuition fees.
The MSc course provides a theoretical and practical basis for a career either as a professional statistician or as a statistical researcher.
Students attend core modules on the mathematical underpinnings of statistics and on fundamental techniques including modern ideas of computationally intensive statistics.
Optional modules allow students to follow pathways in medical, pharmaceutical or environmental statistics, although students supported by NIHR or MRC studentships will be expected to take mainly medical options. During the summer students undertake a 3 month dissertation; for NIHR/MRC funded students this will arise from a real medical dataset or a new development in statistical methodology for medical research.
