Subject: Supervisor - graduate student research
Dear all,
In my university, I am developing a research area and I would like some advice from senior supervisors here in the list about their experience in graduate student advising.
One of my goals is to be the primary adviser of students that are closely related to my research area. Some graduate students have research topics that are close but the majority of them have no clear idea of what to do for their specific research projects. On the other hand, I am coming have with a dozen of research questions and each would need a research project to answer. But I know that, ideally, students independently formulate their research questions and research proposals.
My specific questions for the list members are (a) how have you dealt with aligning graduate students with your research areas while promoting their independent skills in research planning? (b) What are differences between masters and PhD students in this matter?
I will appreciate your insights,
Mauricio
