WORKING WITH CHILDREN AFFECTED BY ARMED CONFLICT: THEORY, METHOD, AND PRACTICE
Proposal for Edited Book
Editors: Myriam Denov and Bree Akesson, McGill University
February 2014
Wars are dramatically altering the lives of children around the world. Millions of children are caught up in conflicts in which they are not merely bystanders, but are also targets and/or participants. While wartime victimization and participation in violence invariably characterizes the experiences of many children, failing to explore children’s rights and capacity to overcome adversity provides a skewed picture of their reality. Theoretical innovations are thus essential.
Drawing from a diverse range of disciplines—such as anthropology, education, human geography, medicine, psychiatry, psychology, public health, social work—this edited book will:
(i) Highlight the realities of children living in circumstances of war and political violence in diverse country contexts;
(ii) Explore novel theoretical and conceptual approaches in studying children affected by armed conflict;
(iii) Examine innovative research methodologies that seek to both empower and engage children affected by armed conflict in the research process through participatory and artsbased methods;
(iv) Critically consider strategies of intervention that validate the perspectives and participation of children themselves.
* We will consider chapters that address one or more of these four abovenoted areas *
There are several features of this edited book that make it distinct and unique. These include: (i) a rights-based approach using the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) (1989) as its point of reference; (ii) a socioecological perspective that will consider both children’s social and physical environment ; (iii) a focus on gender and the experiences of girls affected by armed conflict; and (iv) a diverse geographical representation of children’s experiences by a collection of contributors from diverse regions and contexts, with particular attention to researchers and scholars from the Global South
If you are interested in contributing a chapter, please email [log in to unmask] with an abstract (300 words) and biography (150 words) by March 1st 2014.
