Dear colleagues,
We are writing to announce the formation of a new regional professional organization, based in the Northeastern US, for environmental archaeologists and other scholars interested in the history of human-environmental interactions: the Northeast Environmental Archaeology Network (NEEAN). While we are based in the Northeastern US, the organization is open to any interested individual regardless of location of residence. We intend NEEAN to be open and to include archaeobotany, zooarchaeology, paleoclimate/paleoenvironment, GIS/landscape, and geoarchaeology, as well as environmental history and other related (non-archaeological) disciplines.
The goals of the organization include networking between professionals and nascent professionals (graduate and undergraduate students) and opportunities for sharing knowledge and laboratory protocols, equipment, and facilities among organizations throughout the region. We are hoping that you might be interested in joining NEEAN and working with us to help this network grow and develop.
We intend to hold annual or semiannual meetings, hosted on a rotating basis by member institutions, to provide networking opportunities as well as laboratory tours and demonstrations. Meetings will provide an opportunity for members to bring materials for hands-on identification, to share methodological developments, and to discuss interdisciplinary approaches to research questions with a diverse array of scholars. We are planning our first meeting to be held at Boston University on April 5, 2014 (a Saturday). The meeting is free to attend for all interested professionals and students. This meeting, at least, will not include formal research presentations; rather, it will be focused on networking and building plans for the future.
For more information, and/or to join NEEAN or register for the spring meeting, please visit:

Also please forward this email directly to potentially interested colleagues; you are also welcome to post the announcement to institutional or professional email lists. Please have any interested parties register using the link above or contact us by email.
We are also happy to take any questions or suggestions! Thank you for your interest.
Yours sincerely,
Mac Marston (Boston University)
Alexia Smith (University of Connecticut)
Catherine West (Boston University)
