Apologies for cross posting, but there will be some comics on these MA courses! - see below if interested (funding bursaries also available); also to those of you in HE, would be grateful if the following information could be passed on to any current undergraduate students who are considering studying for an MA.

Bournemouth University's Media School is now inviting applications to our MA Adaptation and MA Literary Media.

MA Adaptation looks at the creative process of moving between different art forms or media and enables students to develop skills in analysing that process. It combines literary analysis with cultural criticism, creative writing and new media storytelling with a modern and contemporary focus. By focusing on both the theory and practice of adaptation, the course takes a more dynamic approach to the study of literature and culture than has traditionally been provided. It departs from period-based approaches and is organized instead around a number of critical themes and topics, including ‘Markets and Audiences’, ‘Transgressive Adaptations’ and ‘Interactive Storytelling’. These themes also provide opportunities to analyse narratives across a range of different media such as film, television, drama and the internet rather than being confined solely to the printed page and book-to-film adaptations. While studying, students will develop skills in cultural criticism, evaluation, analysis and communication. There is also the opportunity to take a more creative route through this course as some units offer the option of being assessed on creative work (accompanied by a piece of reflective writing); and there is the chance to develop an original piece of creative work in place of a final dissertation.

MA Literary Media allows students to combine literary analysis with a series of new theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of English in a range of different media. It explores the proposition that literature exists in a number of different forms, from film to print fiction, and from the internet to television. In other words the course de-privileges the idea of the printed text and considers it alongside the kinds of narrative that exist in other media. Literary Media departs from conventional historical approaches and organises study around a number of important themes and theoretical questions. For example, it raises conceptual questions about how we define literature and culture and what ideological issues are raised by doing so. It gives students a chance to consider how a literary canon can be created or contested, and explores what value judgements are made in the process. Notions of censorship, conformity, transgression and innovation are explored alongside a theoretical consideration of the material and institutional contexts in which culture is produced.

Our members of staff are a combination of academic researchers and practising media industry professionals. Our faculty includes leading national and international scholars in the fields of modern and contemporary literature, media studies, cultural studies and new media writing. Their high level of research specialism is complemented by the high number of industry links we have in the form of published authors, publishers, producers, scriptwriters and journalists. This balance enables us to offer students a special blend of academic rigour and real professional skills.

There are a range of careers open to graduates in both the public sector and the creative industries, including: Scriptwriting; Broadcasting; Publishing; Librarianship; Print Journalism; Radio; Teaching and the Creative Industries. For many students this programme will also provide a route from BA to PhD level study.

For further details please contact Dr Julia Round [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> (Adaptation) or Dr Hywel Dix [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> (Literary Media). Academic bursaries and scholarships are available, further details of which can be found at http://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/futurestudents/postgraduate/funding/scholarships.html.
