DEADLINE EXTENSION:
Workshop Proposal Submission Due to February 14, 2014

i-KNOW 2014
14th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
COGNITIVE COMPUTING AND DATA-DRIVEN BUSINESS
September 16-19, 2014, Graz, Austria

DEADLINE EXTENSION:
Workshop Proposal Submission Due to February 14, 2014

i-KNOW 2014 invites interested researchers to submit workshop proposals
on topics relevant to cognitive computing, knowledge technologies, (big)
data analytics, and data-driven business. Since 2001, i-KNOW has
successfully brought together leading researchers and developers from
these fields and attracted annually over 450 international attendees.

i-KNOW 2014 aims at advancing research at the intersection of
disciplines such as Knowledge Discovery, Semantics, Information
Visualization, Visual Analytics, Social (Semantic) and Ubiquitous
Computing. The goal of integrating these approaches is to create
cognitive computing systems that will enable humans to utilize massive
amounts of data.
We are specifically interested in the integration of data-centric and
user-centric approaches and welcome contributions from both ends of the
spectrum. You will find the conference website at
http://www.i-know.at/

Note to i-KNOW veterans: For the past 13 years, i-KNOW has focused on
knowledge technologies which build the basis for knowledge management.
In the light of new trends such as big data and the massive utilization
of mobile devices we think it is time to embrace new developments in
order to create systems which "interact naturally with humans, learn
from their experiences and generate and evaluate evidence-based
hypotheses". That is, we interpret cognitive computing as the
convergence of various knowledge technologies research fields. On the
other hand, data-driven business represents the business perspective on
cognitive computing and takes application specific knowledge (such as
semantics) into account.

Collocated Conferences: We are proud to announce that EC-TEL 2014
(European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning) will this year be
organized co-located to i-KNOW in Graz. Therefore, we are also
specifically interested in workshops which bridge the two conferences.

Workshops at i-KNOW should form distinguished meeting points for
discussing ongoing work on
- research topics at the intersection of different knowledge technology
disciplines (such as Knowledge Discovery, Semantics, Information
Visualization, Visual Analytics, Social (Semantic) and Ubiquitous
 Computing)
- data-driven business approaches to specific application domains (such
as Life Sciences, Smart Mobility and Energy, Science 2.0 and Open
 Science, Digital Libraries)

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

- Algorithmic and technological developments in knowledge discovery,
 information retrieval and social computing
- Visual interfaces and human computer interaction for knowledge
 analysis and computing
- Natural language processing on the Web and corresponding evaluation
 initiatives
- Applications and scientific competitions of machine learning in
engineering, Life Sciences, and knowledge management
- Algorithmic developments and applications of semantic web technologies
and linked data engineering in general as well as in specific domains
- Digital libraries and Science 2.0
- Multimedia-centered knowledge technologies
- Algorithmic developments and applications of social computing and
 ubiquitous personal computing
- Graphical recommender systems and adaptive systems
- Real-time assistance using augmented reality, context-aware computing
 and ubiquitous visual analytics
- Shared tasks on natural language processing
- Ubiquitous personal computing supporting learning and creativity
- Computer-supported work and learning

---------- GENERAL INFORMATION AND CRITERIA -------------

Each proposal will be reviewed by the members of the program
committee, and ranked based on the overall quality of the proposal and
the workshop's fit to the conference as detailed below. Workshop
duration can be half a day or a full day.

The criteria for judging the quality of workshop proposals are as
follows:
- Workshops cover topics falling in the general scope of the i-KNOW
 conference.
- Workshops are intended to be genuine interactive events and not
 mini-conferences.
- We welcome workshops with creative structures and organizations that
attract various types of contributions and ensure rich interactions.
- Workshops should have a clear focus on a specific technology, problem
 or application.
- There is potentially a significant community interested in the
 workshop's topic.
- We strongly advise having more than one organizer and no more than
four, preferably from different institutions, bringing different
 perspectives to the workshop topic.

---------- ORGANIZATION OF WORKSHOP ----------------------

In case overlapping workshops are proposed, the workshop chair may
contact the organizers to discuss the possibility of merging workshops.
Please note that the duration of a workshop might need to be adjusted
based on the overall number of submissions received. Workshops that
receive less than 5 submissions or have less than 10 people registered
at the early registration deadline might be cancelled.
The organizers of accepted workshops will be responsible for their own
reviewing process, publicity (e.g., website, timelines and call for
papers), and proceedings production. They will be required to closely
cooperate with the Workshop Chair and the i-KNOW 2014 organizers to
finalize all organizational details.

---------- REGISTRATION FEES -----------------------------

Workshop attendees must pay the i-KNOW 2014 full conference registration
fee. Each workshop that attracts more than 10 registered participants
(excluding the organizers) will get one free full registration for the
conference. This registration can be used to cover the expenses of an
invited speaker. Travel subsidiaries for workshop keynoters are
negotiable and quality dependent.

---------- SUBMISSION GUIDELINES -------------------------

Workshop proposals have to be submitted via EasyChair at
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=iknowworkshops2014
Each proposal must consist of a single PDF document written in English,
not longer than 3 pages, which contains the following information:
1. The title and brief technical description of the workshop,
  specifying its goals and motivation.
2. A brief discussion of why the topic is of particular interest at
this time. A brief description of why and to whom the workshop is of
interest, the workshop audience, as well as the expected number of
  participants.
3. A brief description (draft outline) of the proposed workshop
format, discussing the mix of events and activities such as paper
presentations, invited talks, panels, hacking session, or general
  discussion, and an approximate timeline
4. A list of (potential) members of the program committee (at least
50% have to be known and confirmed at the time of the proposal).
5. An indication of whether the workshop should be considered for a
  half-day or full-day event.
6. Related Workshops and Conferences: Is this the continuation of a
workshop series or a new workshop to address an emerging issue?
Please provide information about past versions of this workshop
and other related workshops (including URLs and submission and
  acceptance counts, if available).
7. Names and contact information of the workshop organizers/chair(s)
(name, affiliation, email address, homepage and short (one paragraph)
biography of each chair, explaining the chair's expertise for the
workshop including past experience in organizing/facilitating
workshops). Preferably a single contact person per submission.

The workshop chairs will engage with ACM or IEEE for publishing the
workshop papers in the supplementary proceedings of i-KNOW 2014. This
depends on the quality of the accepted workshops.
