Ah, not being in cold northern climes right now!
We sat last night for a warm hour at dusk by the still waters of Port
Phillip Bay
watching bathers take a dip at St Kilda beach,
while our waitress brought the food and drinks list.
I drank Bulmers cider thinking of the drowned Somerset Levels.
The waitress was from Yorkshire, where her mother is not yet flooded.
Her great luck to be in the right place at the right season was tempered
by hearing most days her poor mother's grumbles.
'Do you send her snaps every day of this?' - the wide view
of passers-by in skimpy clothing enjoying the sand
the cycling, rollerskating, skateboarding crowd,
the steady scarcely-wrinkled sea -
'no, it would be cruel to show her this.'
