3rd February 2014 – Introduction to Focus Groups (1 day) This course provides an introduction to the methods involved in organising and conducting focus groups. The course is divided into two sections. The first section explores how and when to use focus groups in social research. Topics covered include planning for focus groups, developing focus group schedules and moderating focus groups. The second section provides participants with an opportunity to either facilitate or be a member of a focus group discussion. This course is intended to provide a practical introduction to focus groups for researchers who have little or no experience of running them.

4th February 2014 - Introduction to Thematic Approaches to Analysing Qualitative Data (1 day) This course provides an introduction to what is probably the most common general approach in analysing qualitative data used in the social sciences; thematic analysis. The training will mainly focus on thematic approaches to analysing data from in-depth interviews and focus groups although the approaches discussed can be used with other types of qualitative data. The course is primarily intended for researchers with no or limited experience of qualitative analysis. The day includes sessions on different approaches to analysing qualitative data, the principles of ‘grounded theory’ and the constant comparison method, the process of coding data and the development of more conceptual ideas through analysis.

26th & 27th February 2014 - NVivo Training Workshop (2 days) FULL
NVivo is one of the leading qualitative software programs. This two day training workshop provides an overview of the package and step-by-step instruction in its use. Tasks are focussed around efficient project set-up, data management, coding and interrogation tasks. Participants use a combination of sample data (day one) and their own data (day two). This workshop is for version 10 – although will be relevant to those using version 9.

28th February – Mixed Methods Software Planning Seminar (1 day) (Hertfordshire venue) The integration of qualitative and quantitative data and their analyses are greatly facilitated by customized qualitative software. This seminar discusses advances in technology and raises issues to consider when choosing an appropriate software tool according to the type of mixing that is required. Several packages which allow for different types of mixing will be discussed and demonstrated, including MAXQDA, QDA Miner, NVivo and Dedoose. Most of the software packages, which help the researcher to manage mixed methods projects, are excellent products in one way or several! This seminar will help you make an informed choice between products.

19th March – Qualitative Software Planning seminar (1/2 day) (Manchester venue) This seminar focuses on making informed choices between qualitative data analysis software. The CAQDAS Networking Project website provides a range of materials that highlight important considerations in the decision-making process. This seminar builds on this information, discussing the issues to a more advanced level. The range of products are described and compared, their methodological benefits and weaknesses appraised, practical utility and illustrated using data from a range of research studies. Topics covered include: Handling 'data': data organisation - Closeness to data - Output/reporting - Coding and alternative ways of handling analysis – Complex interrogation of data - Expressing ideas in visual ways - Transportation of projects - Team work logistics.

1st – 3rd May 2014 - CAQDAS 2014 Conference: Past, present and future- 25 years of CAQDAS (3 days) This conference will be another opportunity for methodologists, developers and researchers to come together and debate the issues. There will be keynote papers by leading experts in the field, software support clinics and opportunities to present work in progress.
