UCD Human Rights Network (http://www.ucd.ie/law/research/ucdhumanrightsnetwork/) will host the seminar "Direct Provision: A Challenge to Law, A Challenge to Rights" (http://www.ucd.ie/law/eventsseminars/title,197383,en.html) on Friday, 28th February 2014 from 2pm to 4pm in UCD Sutherland School of Law (http://www.ucd.ie/law/) (getting here and travel options from Dublin City: http://goo.gl/maps/imNxK and http://www.dublinbus.ie/en/Your-Journey1/Timetables/?searchtype=place&searchquery=UCD+Belfield).
The system of direct provision for asylum seekers in Ireland (http://humanrights.ie/immigration/an-assault-on-human-dignity-an-assault-on-the-rule-of-law-direct-provision-in-ireland/) will be 14 years in operation in April 2014. This seminar seeks to explore the challenge that the direct provision system poses for law and the challenge this system presents for an inclusive and rights compliant Irish society. The seminar comes at an opportune time, with potential legal challenges to direct provision emerging domestically, as well as opportunities to further highlight the system of direct provision before European and UN human rights bodies. The seminar will explore the challenge that the direct provision system poses for law, the potential for public interest litigation in this area and the challenge this system presents for an inclusive and rights compliant Irish society.
Target Audience: This seminar will be of interest to asylum seekers, solicitors and barristers, politicians, policy makers, students and human rights activists who have an interest in child and family law, immigration, asylum and human rights law and policy.
Speakers include: Senator Jillian van Turnhout, Sue Conlan (CEO, Irish Refugee Council), Kirsty Linkin (Solicitor, Law Centre Northern Ireland) and Dr Liam Thornton (UCD).
