Deadline for abstracts 14th of March 2014
This call for abstracts for the seminar on Gender and Social Change in Developing Regions is specifically designed for PhD students studying in the UK. Convened by Dr Christine Skinner from the University of York and a team of international experts, it aims to give PhD students the opportunity to present a paper in a formal but supportive environment, to enter into debate with peers and to receive feedback from experts in the field who will act as discussants.
The seminar is the third in the ESRC series on Child maintenance: International Perspectives and Policy Challenges http://www.york.ac.uk/spsw/research/child-maintenance-esrc-seminars/
Seminar themes
This third seminar will consider the potential gendered effects of social change on family relationships in developing countries. It aims to explore the impact of family breakdown on obligations to children in separated families and to address the following kinds of questions:

• What are the implications of social change on the maintenance of parental obligations (financial and emotional) to children in separated families?
• How are child maintenance (child support) schemes emerging in developing regions (East Asia and South America) and what key issues do they face?
Main presenters and discussants will include Dr Sirin Sung (Queens University Belfast), Emeritus Professor Gillian Pascall (University of Nottingham) Dr Kay Cook (RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia) Dr Christine Skinner (UK), Professor Dan Meyer (University of Wisconsin, Madison).
