Dear list members,
Some time ago there was a discussion about cycling speed. For a research project I am looking for data about cyclists’ cruising speed.
Different measurements are possible:
- Use of travel survey data to divide reported trip distance by travel time. This has some disadvantages. Short trips are underreported, trip distance along short trips is underestimated. Stopping time at intersections is included as travel time, etc.
- Track data (or data gathered by a similar device). GPS tracks yield reliable speed profiles, but these are about individual cyclists.
- Speed measurements of cyclists passing a certain stretch of road using a stop watch or loop detector.
I believe the latter is best to estimate average cruising speed. Do you know of research reporting such measurements? Thanks in advance!
Kind regards,
