Panel 079 “Hybrid collaboration(s): the anthropology of environmental
health”
Short Abstract
This panel will explore hybrid collaborations between researchers, people
and environments in analyzing environmental health problems. It will deal
with: modes of expression of environmental discomfort, changing meanings of
"environment" and the role of power in mediating these processes.
Long Abstract
The environment where we dwell is what gives us comfort, pleasure and a
sense of security. It is also a place that can be perceived as dangerous and
illness provoking. When our dwelling place is perceived as a causative agent
in a health threat such as cancer, birth defects or breathing problems -
among others - then we are put in the position of fearing that which
surrounds us, something from which we cannot escape. This panel is a call
for papers from researchers who work with communities where environmental
health problems are the focus. The nexus that we want to highlight is how do
the heightened emotions and enhanced sensorial perceptions that surround
environmental toxins play into new conceptualizations of the "environment"?
Are new kinds of hybrid collaborations and networks established between
people and researchers in a spoiled environment? How does the local meaning
of the environment and of human agency change as the environment moves from
being seen as a benign backdrop to becoming a disease-provoking agent? How
is power expressed via these environmentally contextualized collaborations
between researchers, activists and those suffering from a plethora of
environmentally induced diseases?
