University College Dublin: Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Prostate cancer represents a significant health care problem due to the dilemmas associated with its detection and thus treatment especially in light of the projected increases in its incidence. The research team of Professor Brendan Murphy and Professor William Watson have been working together as part of the Prostate Cancer Research Consortium (https://pcrc.tchpc.tcd.ie) and publishing on biomarker discovery for the last four years. The current Prostate Cancer Research Consortium programme of research has identified biomarker panels across a number of biomaterial (Protein – Serum, N-glycosylation – plasma, mRNA/miRNA – Tissue, Epigenetic – Tissue). These markers combined with the current clinical parameters will inform the clinician and patient as to the aggressiveness of the disease and inform the most appropriate treatment strategy to be used. This 12 month post doctoral research fellow position is available to undertake the data integration and identification of the most appropriate panel. The outcome of this project will impact on the patients outcome and quality of life but also alleviate the pressures on our already over burdened health care sector by treating the patients in an appropriate way, preventing wasteful diagnostics procedures such as biopsies and having a better outcome for the patients so that other treatment strategies do not need to be undertaken.
