The School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS) at Heriot-Watt University (HWU) welcomes applications for a post at any level up to Chair from suitably qualified candidates in the of fields actuarial science and insurance mathematics, financial mathematics, or quantitative approaches to financial risk including financial econometrics. The school is internationally renowned in actuarial science and financial risk through the world-leading research activities of its Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics, where the successful candidate will be located. Areas of particular strength include quantitative risk management, longevity risk, pension plan asset-liability modelling, actuarial mathematics, stochastic asset models, and derivative pricing and hedging. The Department has established close links to the financial services industry in Scotland, through the Scottish Financial Risk Academy, and to the Actuarial Profession. It forms part of the Maxwell Institute for Mathematical Sciences, through which its research activities across mathematical sciences are combined with those of the School of Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh. The Maxwell Institute is an international centre of excellence, covering the whole range of mathematical science.
The Maxwell Institute performed extremely strongly in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, achieving critical mass as the third largest mathematics research unit in the U.K., and a combined submission has again been made to the Unit of Assessment B10 (Mathematical Sciences) in REF2014. The Department has for the first time submitted some of its research to Unit of Assessment C19 (Business and Management) in REF2014, a development which highlights our commitment to growing the scope and impact of our research.
The Department has extensive and thriving teaching programmes in actuarial science and financial risk at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. HWU was the first university in the UK to offer a specialist degree course in Actuarial Science and our Department of Actuarial Mathematics and Statistics now offers BSc degrees in Actuarial Science, Financial Mathematics and Statistical Modelling; and MSc degrees in Actuarial Science, Actuarial Management, Financial Mathematics (joint with University of Edinburgh), Quantitative Financial Risk Management, and Quantitative Financial Engineering. There is a very active PhD program.
The postholder will be expected to lead and conduct excellent research in actuarial science and insurance/financial mathematics financial risk or a related area, to further knowledge exchange activities, to develop and deliver innovative teaching in actuarial science and financial risk on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and courses offered by the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, and to carry out such administrative and promotional activities as may be required to achieve these aims.
Applicants should hold a PhD and have an excellent track-record of publishing internationally excellent/world leading research outputs. For appointment at reader or professorial level, applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong track record of research leadership, appropriate to the grade, as evidenced by funding awards or group development.
