There has been much interest and some hype about a new generation of
'Library Services Platforms' that are replacing library management systems
(LMS). I'm doing a presentation at the upcoming (April 2014) UKSG conference
and as part of my preparation am keen to get some feedback (on or off list)
about the broad factors that are key for libraries in terms them moving to a
new generation of systems. I'm taking a kind of 'adoption lifecycle'
approach. It seems to me it's no surprise that introduction of these systems
broadly follows the technology adoption life cycle described and analysed by
Geoffrey Moore in his book 'Crossing the chasm'. In these terms maybe the
new 'library services platforms' will 'cross the chasm' in 2014/15?
It looks as if 2014/15 will see a significant number of UK HE libraries
going into a procurement process. Do the broad themes of vendors (as seen on
their web sites, for example cloud, workflows, etc) match to real library
needs at *this* point in the 'adoption cycle'. For example I see a number of
libraries that place a high value on what might be described as 'business
continuity' delivered through rich functionality. They tend to be concerned
at the gaps in functionality that have been less important to 'innovators'
or 'early adopters'.
It's interesting to see that one of the main HE vendors -Innovative
Interfaces -is also exploring this. http://www.iii.com/content/4for14/
(Forums at three UK locations in February). There is a useful debate to be
had here.
Any feedback will be gratefully received. I hope too to use this to update
the HELibTech 'Next Generation..' page http://helibtech.com/Next+Generation
and also potentially the specification information on LibTech RFP

Many thanks
