And just adding to what Lindsey has said below, as a former OHA in the Army, based in the medical centre I would have had access to a soldier's electronic medical record. Now working in a civilian setting I find not having access without the employee's consent has not hindered my ability to provide useful advice to employee or employer.

I can see why an independent "High Street" physiotherapist would not in the same way that I, as an independent OH Adviser do not and I can see all sorts of reasons why OH in general should not. As Anne says, our boundaries could become very blurred. But, if you move forward 5 years to an established National Health and Work service working on a multi provider basis (I am doing an opinion piece on this in one of the up and coming OH Magazine issues) what is to stop a GP Practice setting itself up as one of those providers. And therefore wouldn't there be an expectation by the employee that the Practice employed OH Adviser sitting round the table with them and putting together some advice for their employer would have access to their NHS record.

They feel that OHA should have access to medical notes, as this is normal practice for physiotherapy. The senior sister has advised that we do not require access as we only advise. However, this is still something the manager wishes to pursue.
