‘Big Food’ and the Global Growth in Noncommunicable Disease
Guest Editors: Simon Williams and Marion Nestle
Summary: Compared to research on ‘Big Tobacco’, ‘Big Food’ is yet to
receive the widespread attention that it deserves, relative to the
burden of disease to which it contributes. This proposed Special Issue
will provide a significant and critically-informed contribution to the
existing body of scholarship on the role of Multinational Food and
Beverage Companies in the global “nutrition transition” and the global
rise in noncommunicable diseases, like diabetes and cardiovascular
illness. The Special Issue will include studies which map, discuss and
critique the various strategies and tactics that Big Food companies use
to increase consumption of their products and to influence policy. We
are interested in extending the conversation on ‘Food Politics’ to new
countries and contexts, and in looking at recent trends in the fast
food, soft drink, packaged and processed food sectors (amongst others).
Submissions should be made in the usual way through the Manuscript
Central system, http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ccph, selecting 'Special
Issue' as the 'Manuscript Type'.
