There are a couple of
youtube clips I've shown to students, although now some are too old to
remember Konnie Huq as a Blue Peter presenter:

and Mandarin

A few years ago, I did a
class with some 6th form maths students and they got the hang of it and
were soon showing me how to multiply and divide (which went straight
over my head!), they were really taken with it and wanted to set up an
Abacus club. It didn't materialise (time pressure) but I suspect it
would be a very good thing.

Hi Helen,
I have been
using abacuses with my mandarin immersion tutor group for their
enrichment lesson. I bought the Japanese abacuses on amazon but soon
discarded them as I found out there were so many good abacus apps for
the Ipad which are more appealing to my pupils. Most of these apps
provides step-by-step tutorials so it is all about independent
learning.
Let me know if you want to know more about the apps.
Thanks,
Qingwei
