'Why Berlusconi?
An historical and cultural analysis of the phenomenon of Berlusconismo'
A discussion with Giovanni Orsina and Andrea Mammone
'Why do Italians vote for Berlusconi? How is it possible for his government to last for so long?' As Italians abroad, each of us has been asked one of these questions at least once in the past 20 years.
Two Italian historians and commentators Giovanni Orsina and Andrea Mammone, will seek to answer these and more questions through an analysis of the historical, political and cultural factors that have allowed Berlusconi's leadership to take root and endure in Italy.

Giovanni Orsina is professor of history at Luiss-Guido Carli University Rome, where he is also deputy director of the School of Government and director of the Master in European Studies. Author of the most recent and complete historical analysis of the Berlusconi Era: "Il Berlusconismo nella Storia d'Italia", (Marsilio 2013), he also writes for Italian newspapers La Stampa and Il Giornale.
Andrea Mammone is an historian of modern Europe at Royal Holloway, University of London. He has extensively published on the European far right, Italian history, and other European themes. His book Transnational Neofascism in France and Italy is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press. He also coedited Italy Today: The Sick Man of Europe,(Routledge, 2010). He has written for the International Herald Tribune, Foreign Affairs, The Guardian, and The NY Times.
