So in answer to the sole question that I was asked to put forwards regarding PDF screen readers:

The contents of your e-mail message have been noted.

Due to the plethora of computer reading software packages it would not be possible for the awarding bodies to ensure that each question paper produced in PDF format was compatible with each and every available computer reading software package.

However, the awarding bodies are working closely with BDA (British Dyslexia Association) and RNIB to address matters. This will of course take time.

I would suggest that your experiences of computer readers and PDF question papers are relayed to the respective awarding bodies. The question papers are of course produced by the awarding bodies and I am sure that they would value your feedback as part of the evolving production process for non-interactive electronic question papers.

May I thank you for taking the time to share your observations.

Yours sincerely
Nick Lait
Head of Examination Services
JCQ

The impression that I got from the meeting is that the JCQ is currently trying to assist where possible but has no control over its awarding bodies and obviously over our management, hence the awarding bodies are all moving in different directions (viz. exam stationary) and our management are not acting consistently either nationally or within sectors. One thing that became abundantly clear is that the desired (by the JCQ at least) transfer of ownership of the whole access arrangements process from the exams office (the old pink book) to SENCo's and Senior Management (the new terracotta book) is a slow process.

Regards

Duncan

Hi All

I am lucky enough to be going on the RTA Access Arrangements course on Friday 24th January. The joining instructions say:

"there will be dedicated a Q & A session towards the end of the day. Presenter Nick Lait has asked whether any of you have any questions in advance. If you do, please could you email them to us before hand? Thank you. We will then send them on to Nick and he will respond to these orally on the day. Your question will also be followed up with a written response afterwards."

Given that Mr Black already has a reputation as a troublemaker from the AoC conference last year, I am willing to act as spokesman and ask any questions that you would like putting forwards and then post the answers up here.

Regards

Duncan (aka Mr Black)
