Hi All,

We've used a few different approaches over the years, each configuration
had to suit the capabilities of the particular computer:

Panasonic Toughbook, CF18, CF19 - has a wake from sleep function that is
controlled via the serial port. We programmed a microprocessor to send
the wake up command if the user switch (which was also the scanning
input for EzKeys) was held for more than 5 seconds.

Panasonic Tablet computer CF-H2 - This had a BIOS option that woke it
from complete shutdown when power was placed on the DC input. We
programmed a microprocessor to withdraw power and then return it if the
user switch was held for more than 5 seconds. This triggered the start
up function, but had no effect if the unit was already going as it kept
running on the internal battery.

BIOS option on power detect. Some desktop computers and most systems
capable of running as a file server have settings in the BIOS to: (a)
return to the last state when power is applied, which is used to recover
from an unexpected power failure (b) start up when power is applied (c)
do nothing - wait for manual switch press. We have had users shut down
their computer using the normal method, and then press a switch
connected to a Power Box, Power Link or similar device to turn off the
power to the computer. With the BIOS set to start on power detection,
the computer will start when power is returned via the external mains
switching unit. Be wary using an access (scanning) switch to also
activate the switching unit, as every second toggle will unconditionally
turn off the computer! A nice approach would be to detect the lowered
power consumption when the computer is gracefully shut down, and use
this to reset the switching unit. The user switch could just be an 'on'
switch in this scenario.

And finally! Many clients are OK putting the computer into sleep mode
versus complete shutdown. From this mode the computer can be returned to
full operation using a variety of options including any key press, mouse
click.

Cheers,
James Dean

Hi Geoff,

Thanks - Interesting! Hadn't seen that - that is 'only' waking the
computer from sleep (I guess, just sending a single keystroke), not off
though... I think the switch would also do this (as a mouse click)?

Cheers

Simon

I remember a big green switch that was supposed to wake up the PC ?

ECO-Button, This might do what you want.

Hi all,

Anyone found anything that achieves this?

I know it is possible using the 'Wake on Lan' functionality of
PCs/Laptops (where it exists) - by sending a 'magic packet'(!).

Only a couple of AAC devices do this (and I guess this is how they do
it) these days... I also think there was a student project that made
something to do this but, don't think it was released.

I just want a little dongle that I can plug into the network port, put
in parallel with the users' switch, and leave.

My latest reason for asking is a client who uses a headmouse with his
laptop but relies on care staff to start it up. He doesn't want/can't
leave it on all the time.

Any ideas/products I've missed?

Cheers,

Simon
