Does the quadrant still move? If so do you know if it has a ratchet mechanism or other facility to make sure it only moves in one direction? Also, is there any evidence that more panels could be slotted in place?

It does look like some kind of livestock sorting/examination gate but the lattice seems too wide for sheep, too frail for cows, and too short/low for deer. I'm sure I've seen these somewhere but can't place the memory! We have some old sorting pens here, but nothing like this (as far as I recall anyway, but who knows what could be out in the Lincolnshire marsh).

I have no idea what thesaurus term you could use!

Festive mornings to you all!

I'm pretty certain that there's modern equivalents on the fences of
some fields near my house, if not the same then very similar looking -
those fields have horses in them. That may just be co-incidence as
opposed to the turnstiles being specifically for horse movement ,
though...

Cheers!

Alex

After some discussion with colleagues, we're of the opinion that it is
related to livestock movement such as sheep as well. I wouldn't want to
take a horse through there due to the small space and the possibility of
the segment being aligned incorrectly. And why would you when there is
an adjacent gate?

I've seen circular pens with a gate either side of a fence used for
moving sheep before. It was to allow the farmer to get the right sheep
in the pen and then let those sheep into the next field, keeping the
ones he didn't want to let out in the first field. I've never seen one
with a rotating quadrant though.

Emma

Subject: Christmas Quiz!

Anyone seen one of these before? It's a gate in a C19 deerpark fence and
appears to be a sort of turnstile/kissing gate for horses. It's hard to
photograph but it's a circular fence with a rotating quadrant within and
two entrances/exits adjacent to the fenceline. If it were set correctly
you could probably ride a horse in and push the segment round until you
could exit. If the segment were in the wrong place, you couldn't and
might as well use the 'normal' gate adjacent. Any ideas, any thesaurus
terms, anyone still there?

Merry Christmas.
