After reading the tantalisingly short chapter "Wade Blank's Liberated
Community" by Laura Hershey in "The Ragged Edge: The Disability
Experience from the pages of the first 15 years of the Disability
Rag", I was wondering if anyone on this list might know if there is
anything else published about the Atlantis Community (an early
"independent living" community experiment founded by Blank in Denver,
Colorado)?
All I could find by googling was essentially the same information from
Hershey's chapter duplicated in a few places on the web, and some
links suggesting that the Atlantis Community still exists in some
form, and did at one point have a website, but these now go to one of
those domain holding pages.
Google Books suggests that the book "What We Have Done: An Oral
History of the Disability Rights Movement" by Fred Pelka has some
info, but the relevant pages are not shown in the preview so I don't
know whether it has more detailed information than Hershey's chapter.
Does anyone have any more pointers?
Steve
